ADHD BC Launches Community Engagement in Partnership with MCFD
For Immediate Release
Nanaimo, BC - October 9th, 2023.
ADHD Advocacy Society of BC, founded last year by ADHD-identifying leaders, and funded by a generous grant from the Ministry for Child and Family Development (MCFD), and is launching a community engagement process to connect with diverse ADHD families and document their unique experiences, and what support services they need now and into the future.
“We know from lived experience and what we have heard from families across the province, that there has historically been no clear path to obtaining a diagnosis, let alone accessing any further support services with just an ADHD diagnosis. This engagement process is integral to inform the MCFD on what a new provincial Child and Youth with Support Needs (CYSN) system could look like for ADHD families across BC.” says Chantelle, Board Chair of ADHD Advocacy Society.
-There are approximately 70,000 children and youth from 0-19 who have ADHD in BC. PEOPLE 2020 (gov.bc.ca)
-CYSN currently does not accept children and youth with just an ADHD diagnosis.
-80% of adults and 44% of children with ADHD have at least one additional mental
health condition (e.g., anxiety, depression, substance abuse, eating disorders). ADHD and Mental Health: October is ADHD Awareness Month (caddac.ca)
If you live in British Columbia and your child or youth has been diagnosed with ADHD (or suspected to have ADHD), we want to hear from you!
